My dad will be watching it! LOL
Today we will be visiting Sigmaringen, a very quaint city in the South of Germany where the history of my family is highly visible.
Below is the picture of the city hall:
Part of the city:
Sigmaringen is a city in southern Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, at the upper Danube, formerly Hohenzollern, capital of the Sigmaringen district.
It was first mentioned in 1077 and is particularly renowned for its wonderfully preserved Hohenzollern Castle.
On September 7, 1944, following the Allied invasion of France, Henri Philippe Pétain and members of the Vichy government cabinet fled to Germany and established a government in exile at Sigmaringen. Pétain returned to France in April 1945. French writers Céline and Lucien Rebatet, fearing for their lives because of their political and anti-Semitic writings, fled along with the Vichy government to Sigmaringen.
Sigmaringen was the birthplace of Ferdinand of Romania (1865-1927), king of Romania (1914-1927).
My dad's ancestors can be seen in the potraits displayed at Castle Hohenzollern:
Here's the website of part of my family tree:
http://www.hohenzollern.com/en/index.html
however, dad holds the title von Windemuth which is from the North of Germany. His family tree is huge and hohenzollern is just a small part. Their trade mark is their noses! which I hope I'm not getting it coz it's rather big! If you visit that castle, part of the wings are open for viewing.
I will show more of my history later on. I still can't get dad to share out his photo albums from his computer. Until then..... |

That's me running up to the Castle Hohenzollern. That side of the castle is private property.
:::::Onkle Karl's House::::::
Onkle Karl built this house from the exact blue print of my great-grandparents house (from Oma side). This house was built without a single nail involved. It's sad when my Uhr Oma passed away and a few years back that other older house (original one) was given to dad's cousin and he ran it down. It's a beautiful cottage facing a big field and forest. There were cherry trees and all kind of other fruit trees but this cousin chopped them all off! :icon_angry3: My grandmother is not very happy with him for destroying such an old property. Dad said one day he will buy that cottage when his cousin goes broke!
:::::: Uhr Oma's Mill ::::::
This mill is more than 500 years old. It was the first ever mill to have the patent and trade mark name muesli. When you eat muesli, you will know that it's history dated back to this mill. Since my Uhr Oma (great grandmother) passed away a few years back, this mill is now under the restoration and care of the United Nation.
Some of you may remember the story I told of my mom who found a errr... she thought it was horse hair but actually it was one of their ancestors who died in the mill incident. They kept the hair up in the attic as memory!
The mill is so huge and there are 4 storey basements which has been locked for many years. It is said more history will be revealed inside there but my great-grandfather put it in his will that only the 4 generations after his death will be able to expose what's inside. That means my kids' generation.
More soon. Sit back and have some hot cocoa. |

LOL Yeah... the hair is still there. I guess it would be hanging there forever! There are lots of old black and white ancestors pictures and they look very scary because nobody is laughing! LOL Christine!!! It was pretty scary for my mom and she was spooked. Since the incident, she refused to go up the attic when she visited my uhr-oma and only stick to the kitchen area. There are too many secret histories sealed up in the past.

Sigmaringen is famous for its castle but there are hundreds of castles all over Germany and Europe. There are castles tours available. Yes.... that was me in a very thick, red winter jacket. It was very cold on that day.

These traditional clothes are from South of Germany. I have one when I was a little girl. |

The house is under the protection law of the United Nation now so it is sealed. My dad said in his grandfather's will, only the 4th generation after his death will be able to open the seal of the basement ground.
Right now I'm the 3rd generation. So my kids will be able to open it or is it my grandkid?! Dad suspected it could do with a lot of political secrets because our family properties were not touched or destroyed by the Nazi nor the allied forces. But we don't know that for sure.
yes, the dindl is a traditional costume of the South of Germany. There are different styles in Austria and Switzerland too but basically to me they all look alike although dad said I'd better be careful not to put them together when I speak about it with these people because they are very proud of their original origins. Don't want to step onto anyone's toes! LOL |
