TEENick Picks 1
Written by Brent Simon

Ever since they were first introduced, I always wondered about DVD players in automobiles and what they would mean for the quaint adolescent road trip pastimes of my own childhood — activities like reading, playing some sort of regional variation on “I Spy,” listening quietly to music, sleeping and screaming at your siblings and likewise bearing the brunt of their own immaturity and psychoses. Now I don’t have to wonder any longer.

You see, in my mind, DVD players in the confined space of a car only exacerbated the problem of a single DVD player or television in a home — namely, one outlet of entertainment and a myriad of irritable opinions about what movie or program everyone should be watching. Why foist that entirely predictable argument upon everyone? Why not enjoy some much more completely irrational quarrel about, I don’t know, the single flavor of Bugles you failed to purchase at the gas station, or the faint smell of freon emanating from the air conditioner? I failed, however, to envision what I should have perfectly foreseen in a land of eagerly embraced SUVs — that the rear of every seat could/would be equipped with its own screen, thus allowing for the blissful isolation of discrete, tailored programming.

To this end, something like TEENick Picks 1, a two-hour DVD compendium of fan favorite episodes of Nickelodeon’s branded, Sunday-night kids’ line-up, is the logical product extension of DVD-enabled SUVs. Featuring episodes of Ned’s Declassified, Unfabulous and Romeo! on DVD for the first time, alongside perennial faves Drake & Josh and Zoey 101, TEENick Picks 1 makes for an easy, one-stop shopping travel companion.

The episode of Zoey 101, starring Jamie Lynn Spears (yes, Britney’s younger sister), finds Zoey getting expelled from her private school when prank wars get out of hand. In the single serving of Romeo!, starring Lil’ Romeo and his dad, Master P, our junior playa denies having a girlfriend in a radio interview, which doesn’t sit well with his steady girl. In Unfabulous, to get out of brother Ben’s shadow, Addie (Emma Roberts, of the forthcoming Nancy Drew movie) sets out to do something he never did, but becomes known on her own for all the wrong reasons. Drake & Josh’s episode, meanwhile, centers on Josh’s visiting, homesick e-pal, and what happens when a friendship rite he arranges turns out to be (whoops!) a marriage ceremony — which, come to think of it, is probably what happened to the elder Spears during her drunken Vegas nuptials to that guy she knew from high school. Umm, or something like that.

Look, is TEENick Picks 1 the best point of entry for those not at least passably familiar with the aforementioned shows? No. As temporary distraction for 7- to 11-year-olds, though, it’s probably better than Old Maid or Go Fish, though not as good as a Gameboy or PSP. And hey, it needn’t necessarily be shared!
