Thousands of children across Australia are to be weighed, measured and interviewed about their diet under a national plan to tackle obesity, the government said.
Up to a quarter of Australian children aged between seven and 15 are overweight or obese, causing rising rates of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, the health department said.
Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott said 4,000 children would take part in the national nutrition survey -- the most comprehensive stock-taking in more than a decade of what Australian youngsters eat and their levels of physical activity.
As part of the anti-obesity campaign, the government also launched a healthy eating website.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said in February that 62 percent of men and 45 percent of women fell into the overweight or obese categories, up about 10 percent in the past decade.
"Helping consumers make informed choices about their lifestyle, particularly about the food they eat, is an important role for industry as well as government," said Abbott.
"The government wants to support, motivate and educate Australians to build a healthy, active life, not to regulate or ban."
The results of the three million dollar (US 2.2 million dollars) survey would be available next year, Abbott added. |
