Since I am a citizen of Germany, I am going to introduce this country and it's places and cultures on this thread. This will include some really nice places I have been, a little German language and its meaning and hope everyone will learn something out of my culture and a big part of my life.
I'll post German food in the Food section!

Official name: Federal Republic of Germany
Capital: Berlin
Official Language: German
Population: 82,400,000 people

Above is the map of Germany. My grandparents now live in the South of Germany, in the State called Baden Wuerttenberg, one of the two richest state in Germany. They live close to 'Bodensee' or Lake Constance in English.

Today's topic of interest would be:
Lake Constance

Lake Constance is situated in the Alps bordered by 3 countries : Germany, Austria and Swizerland. If you want to circle the lake by car without stopping, it will take you about 5 - 6 hours going through all 3 countries.

However, I am going to take you on a tour around Lake Constance starting with Lindau, Germany. It is a little quaint village where my dad's god-father owns a very famous cheese shop. Hold your noses everyone....

I stay in many parts of Germany, usually more at my grandparents which is the South, near the famous Black Forest.
Today I'm bring all of you on a tour to Lindau, a quaint city by the Lake Constance.

Here is a panoramic view of Lindau. I've pointed to you where I usually stay when I am there. Dad always take the suite above which has a balcony and it overlooks the beautiful lake. Most of the guests at that hotel are ancient LOL.... when you are 40 years old, you are still a baby there! It's a very famous hotel because it's very old and well establish.

We usually stay in Lindau after visiting Oma and Opa. It takes only 45 minutes to drive there and visit dad's God-father who owns a cheese shop. I'll point that out later.

Because Lake Constance is a tourist spot, we usually stay a day or two in Lindau (for visiting Godfather) and then drive around the lake, stopping and staying at different other beautiful spots around the lake. Enough said, let's enjoy Lindau for today.

Uncle Walter's cheese shop is just next to the fame City Hall of Lindau. That beautiful building has still the original hand painted drawing which is very old- I don't know how old exactly but every tourist who visits Lindau would sure want a picture taken there.

Uncle Walter supplies cheese to all the hotels in Lindau and he also owns a cheese factory. When we visit him, it usually takes all 3 of us a few deep breaths to get inside because the smell of cheese is very strong, almost yucky! Mom especially, needs to go out of the shop a few times to get fresh air because she gets dizzy from the intoxicating smell! LOL However, some of the cheese are really yummy.

Our day is usually spent taking a ferry cruise around the lake.

It takes about 3 hours in the ferry and especially nice when the weather is beautiful, sunny with some cool breeze. You can also take a ferry to other cities by the lake but since we drive, we will only take the day tour.

Then we walked around the old city, sat for coffee and cake and in the evening we will go out for a dinner with Uncle Walter and his wife. He has no children, so he took his friend (Opa's) son, which is dad as his God-son. We will have a Bavarian dinner because Uncle Walter is not adventurous.

I'll post more pictures on the tourist spots around the Lake.

Now we travel towards the city of Bergenz, in Austria. The Austrian like the German speak German with some local dialets but if you can speak German, it's easy to get your way around.

Bregenz is the cultural capital of the Lake Constance region
Hundreds of events, exhibitions and festivals every year. 8 galeries in the city-centre - a genuine culture tour. The "Bregenz Spring Festival"- an international dance festival - "The Bregenz Summer Festival" and the modern-design architecture of the "Museum of Modern Art Bregenz KUB", including a variety of theatre stages: the Theatre am Kornmarkt with 20 home-produced, national and international performances and plays. The "Bregenz Summer Festival" is the highlight of the year: the largest lakeside stage, the most interesting theatre directors, unique opera performances, and a magnificent orchestra with over 50 years of tradition: the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. International audience, spectacular lakeside performances, opera rarities and symphonic concerts.

These cultural events guarantee for a variety of unforgettable evening events.

I will bring you later to Mainau, a little island on the German side of Lake Constance. That island is a tropical paradise island in the middle of the Alps! Until later.......

"Ich spreche ein wenig Deutsch" meaning...
I can speak a little German.

Mainau, Island of Flowers
Mainau island, lake Constance (Bodensee) near Konstanz, Germany.
As far back as 1827, Hungarian Prince Esterházy designed the present-day courtyard and planted precious exotic and domestic flowers. In 1853, Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden acquired the island as a summer residence. He extended the tree population, created the arboretum and designed the “Italian Rose Garden”. He also introduced lemon, orange and palm trees to the Mainau.

Below are some pictures of the beautiful garden.

Not bad? "Koennen Sie Deusch sprechen?" meaning
Do you know how to speak German?

Today we travel to the famous BLACK FOREST where the original cucko-coo clock came from.

"SchwarzWald" or Black Forest
The Black Forest is a wooded mountain region in southwestern Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. With 22,950 kilometers (14,260 miles) of trails, the Black Forest is a favorite spot for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.

Country side during spring and summer

Snowy winter wonderland:

Typical Black Forest-style Farm Houses.
They are so beautiful especially in Spring and Summer when all windows are filled with flowers. You can stay in many of the guest houses there and it is a real experience waking up with nature and cows moo-ing! On one of our trips to the Black Forest, dad checked us in one of the guest houses. Late night, mom's especially sensitive nose detected some foul smell from the farm! The wind has shifted and blowing it in the guest house direction and she spent the whole night covered in perfume spray and when it didn't help, she used her vicks!! LOL You could have seen her face turning green. The next day, after a nice breakfast for dad and I as mom couldn't eat because the smell was still there, we checked out and made sure this time we stayed in the village center so no cows or pigs will disturb her!!! Ha..ha..

The Black Forest Cuckoo-Coo Clock:
They come in many beautiful designs and their woodcarving is one of the best. If you like Nativity Scene for the manger, this is THE place to get them.
