Actually, "duit raya" is not compulsory at all. No one knew who started it. Maybe it's meant for kids to eat the food served first, and then they'll receive 'em. =p |

'Course we do!=p Well, raya or formally known as Hari Raya Eid ul-Fitr or Aidilfitri is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid-ul-Fitr lasts 3 days. Muslims give money to the poor(if they have enough money for them and their family on the night and day of Raya)and wear their best clothes.
Well, on the first day, after doing our first prayer of the day and breakfast although we eat a little symbolizing the end of Ramadhan (the month of fasting). Then we attend special congregational prayers.
Then, we do what kids like best. Collecting duit raya! Well, not exactly - we visit our relatives' and friends'. The duit raya or ang pau or raya money is not compulsory. Maybe it's a 'payment' for kids to visit them. Well, children are not prone to visit, right?
It is a day of forgiveness, moral victory, peace of congregation, fellowship, brotherhood and unity. Muslims celebrate not only the end of all that fasting but also thank God for the help and strength that they believe he gave them through the previous month to help everyone practice self-control. It is a time of giving and sharing.

The duit raya or 'payment' is good for the kids and parents. For kids - well, it's their money and they could buy whatever they want - sweets, video games..For the parents - well, the money could be saved or used to buy the needs for school the next year since in Malaysia or other countries it's celebrated on the school holidays (last term). |
